Positioning a Large Artwork Above a Sofa
Tips

A Five Points living room shows how the sofa, side furniture and seated view shape the placement of one large artwork.
Position art above a sofa by reviewing the furniture group and the seated view together. The center of the bare wall is only one possible reference; the sofa, adjacent lamps and other pieces can define a different visual center.
In this Five Points, Raleigh home, Handydux installed artwork for a project coordinated with Hidell Brooks Gallery. The photograph shows a wide landscape above a brown sofa, with side furniture and lamps framing the setting.
Before approving a position, put the sofa where it will remain. Check the artwork from the main seat and from the doorway. Decide whether it should center over the sofa alone or the wider furniture arrangement. Keep the frame’s relationship to the sofa back visible in the approval photo instead of cropping to the artwork alone.
Lighting also deserves a separate look. A placement that appears balanced straight on can look different with lamps on or daylight entering from the side. The photograph can illustrate the relationship, but it cannot establish a universal hanging height for another room.
For a designer-led installation, provide the placement drawing or annotated room photo, frame dimensions and the person authorized to approve adjustments on site. Confirming those details lets the installer preserve the design intent while assessing the actual artwork and wall conditions.
